One of my favorite types of sessions I offer is the Fresh 48 session — and if you’re expecting a baby, this is one experience you’ll definitely want to consider capturing.
A Fresh 48 session is a special type of newborn photo session done within the first 24–48 hours after your baby is born. These sessions typically take place in your hospital, birth center, or home, depending on where you deliver. I travel to locations throughout Kansas City, Blue Springs, Lee’s Summit, Independence, Overland Park, and surrounding areas to document these first, unforgettable hours.
There is nothing quite like the emotion, tenderness, and beauty of those early moments with your brand-new baby — from hospital bassinet snuggles to sleepy yawns and the way your baby still has that “just born” look. As a Kansas City newborn photographer, I’m always honored to help families preserve those raw, honest memories forever.
The best time for a Fresh 48 hospital session is during daylight hours, ideally between 10 AM and 3 PM. That window gives us the best natural light in your postpartum room — which is so important for beautiful, clean, natural-looking images.
Natural daylight is softer and more flattering for newborn skin tones. Hospital lighting can sometimes cast harsh yellow or green tones, so we’ll typically turn off overhead lights and open the blinds to let in as much natural light as possible. I’ll place your baby’s bassinet near the window and guide your family into the best lighting for those sweet early portraits.
If your hospital room is darker or has limited window light (which definitely happens in some Kansas City hospitals!), I may use a low-powered flash, bounced off the ceiling to gently brighten your space. I only use flash when absolutely necessary, and always in a way that keeps your baby comfortable and the vibe soft and natural.
During your Fresh 48 session, you don’t need to worry about posing or perfection. These are candid, emotional images that capture the beauty of your growing family as you welcome your newest member. I’ll photograph your newborn solo, with parents, with siblings (if they’re visiting), and capture all the tiny details — the hospital bracelets, the swaddle blanket, the sleepy little sighs.
These sessions are laid-back and gentle. There’s no pressure to get “dressed up.” Most parents wear cozy, neutral loungewear or robes, and babies are often swaddled or in a simple onesie.
